People in Autissiodorum were not quite as enthusiastic about Patrick's mission as Patrick was. They even went so far as to encourage him not to go, arguing that he was far too unqualified. Patrick was uneducated, uneloquent, and his Latin was unimpressive. Those kinds of discouraging voices may account for some of the fourteen years it took Patrick to finally go to Ireland.

Although Patrick was not perceived as a scholar, a fact that was often held against him, he must have been quite well read in the Bible — if not when he arrived in Autissiodorum, then at least by the time he had worked in Ireland for some years. Out of the circa 70 books that have at different times been part of the Biblical Canon, Patrick's writings allude to 54. Patrick was also clearly aware of Church history and various contemporary Church developments, referring to at least eight different Church councils, and naming 20 church fathers.
